The Power of Saying Yes: Three Lessons from a 48-Hour Mindset

Inspired by the TEDx talk by Tala Tariq Alharbi at Thamer International Schools

In 2022, what seemed like a simple 48-hour filmmaking challenge at the Red Sea International Film Festival became a turning point in the creative journey of Tala Tariq Alharbi. As a university freshman, she stepped into an opportunity without complete certainty, preparation, or guarantees. That single decision eventually opened doors to international recognition through When Red Blooms, as well as opportunities with the AFAC x Netflix Women in Film Fund, the Cannes Film Festival, and NEOM programs.

Her talk highlights an important truth for creatives and young professionals alike: the greatest obstacle is often not lack of talent, but fear of taking opportunities before feeling “ready.”

Opportunities Rarely Wait for Perfection

Many creatives spend years preparing, planning, and doubting themselves before taking action. However, high-stakes opportunities often appear unexpectedly and demand immediate decisions.

The 48-hour challenge forced a shift away from perfectionism and toward decisive action. Instead of overthinking every detail, the focus became creating, adapting, and delivering under pressure.

Growth does not always come from having complete confidence. Sometimes it comes from saying “yes” before certainty exists.

Bold Decisions Create Momentum

One courageous opportunity can completely redirect a career path. What began as a short filmmaking challenge eventually became a bridge from academic learning to international exposure.

The talk demonstrates how momentum is built through action. Every experience, connection, and achievement that followed was linked to one initial decision to participate despite uncertainty.

Creative success is often less about waiting for the perfect moment and more about being willing to enter rooms that feel intimidating.

Adopt the “48-Hour Mindset”

At the center of the talk is the idea of a “48-hour mindset” — acting quickly, embracing risk, and treating every opportunity as a possible gateway to something larger.

This mindset encourages people to stop viewing fear as a reason to hesitate. Instead, fear can become proof that the opportunity matters.

The reality is that not every opportunity will succeed. But the only opportunity guaranteed to fail is the one never attempted. By taking initiative and stepping into unfamiliar spaces, creatives allow themselves the possibility of growth, discovery, and transformation.
